I like growen orange, but here in my part of Calif;
the howard dill is decided by the crowd.
The crowd does not know what it takes for a grower to
grow these things;
They are asked to pick "Pretty"; here in calif,the word
pretty, cute, adorable, are the same, so if your dressed
as" ZORRO" with an ok pumpkin you will win the howard dill.
I am trying to work with my gps rep;he says he gets asked
all the time to fix this, so that, it is fair for all the
growers to show up and get fair chance on the howard dill.
Is it worth cutting your orange pumpkin and taken it to a
a contest where the crowd decides??
Or should I give up asken the gpc to fix this problem and
just go get me a ZORRO OUTFIT

Both! Definitely! Get your ZORRO outfit, take your pumpkin with you and then: Here we go, ZORRO is carving his home-grown pumpkin Zzzzzzzz.
For sure, you will win an award with such a performance.

...and then, after carving the pumpkinZzzzzzz you have the attention of the crowd on your side, and you will speak to them and fix the problem...before ZORRO disappearZzzzzz

If the Howard Dill is awarded by the crowd, then I would find somewhere else to take my beauty. It's cool for weigh-offs to have crowd favorites but not as the Howard Dill award. But that's just my 2 cents.

we use a member group of veteran growers each year to pick the hd award winner.

growers know whats up-the growers history-whats fair-who really deserves it.most importantly? some growers just miss out one year and having this knowledge helps if they have a contender again the following year. just to be fair.

besides with a large attendance having the crowd vote could be like a chinese fire drill.

chinese fire drill -----( a bunch of people running around in a helter/skelter manner,not knowing who or what got them excited but they know theres a fire somewhere? )also they cant quite figure out why the water bucket is almost empty after passing through a couple dozen handoffs?
