Farming- a bunch of catastrophies that result in a lifestyle

Its not a string, it unraveled out of the stem when I cut it off: http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=204767

This is not a root, but it certainly does look like one. I also do not think it is a pollen tube as pollen would travel from the stigma to the seed cavity and would not have a reason to go through the stem.
I have seen this structure before and it looks like an umbilical cord of sorts. The closest scientific structure name that I can find is what is called a "funiculus" which is a slender structure that can support a plant part or plant organ. Not sure if this is what it actually is but it is an interesting sounding word if nothing else;-)

I saw this same thing for the first time the other day when I was culling pumpkins. No idea what it is.
