I have been reading lots of reports of extremely long main vines (like 10-12' or more) without much or any secondary production. I have a suggestion or an idea that could help with this unfortunate situation. You can choose to take it or leave it. What is happening is a process called apical dominance. Apical dominance is controlled by hormones in the plant. In order to solve the problem We need to break the apical dominance of the plant, to trigger a release of of new hormones that will encourage growth from other growing points on the plant. We could discuss what cultural and environmental factor's trigger the release of these hormones that accentuate apical dominance, but it doesn't really matter at this point in the season. (if you are already dealing with this problem, you need a solution) I believe what will solve this problem is to cut the main vine off at it's growing point and retrain the nearest secondary to grow as the main. This simple act will trigger a growth response in the plant to start pushing out secondaries.
